What is National Nutrition Month?

From the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics:

National Nutrition Month (NNM) is a nutrition education and information campaign which focuses on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits.

Every March, we promote NNM through a different theme, and the theme for 2018 is Go Further with Food

What does it mean to "go further with food"?

To us, this means being conscious of our food choices to help fuel our bodies appropriately while reducing food waste. Reducing food waste has a positive impact on the environment, families, and the community as a whole.

You can learn more about shopping locally to reduce food waste here or how to better meal prep here

How are you going to "go further with food" this month? Leave us a comment below!

March is here, which means it’s National Nutrition Month (NNM). 2013 marks the 40th Anniversary of this important campaign by the Academy for Nutrition and Dietetics (formerly the American Dietetic Association).

The Academy’s theme is “Eat Right, Your Way, Every Day,” encouraging personalized healthy eating styles and recognizing that food preferences, lifestyle, cultural and ethnic traditions and health concerns all impact individual food choices.

At FISD and Compass, Eating Right Our Way means focusing on taste.  Our “Taste Your Way to Wellness” promotion highlights the flavors of healthy food, from whole grains, to healthy fats, to plant-based proteins — to emphasize that eating right also means eating great-tasting food.

In encouraging healthy eating and participating in food and nutrition education, we sometimes forget to focus on the idea that quality food that is prepared well TASTES GOOD.  In schools, we are quick to dismiss the...

We are currently in the midst of March, which means we are right in the middle of National Nutrition Month.  This year, the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (AND) (formerly the American Dietetic Association) has brought us the theme “Get Your Plate in Shape.”

What does this mean?AND suggests that we all think about what goes on our plate or in our bowl. Foods like vegetables, fruits, whole grains, low-fat dairy products and lean protein foods contain the nutrients we need without added calories. Over the day, we should include foods from all the food groups to get the variety of nutrients we need. Specific tips include:

  • Make half your plate fruits and vegetables.

  • Add fruit to meals and snacks.

  • Make at least half your grains whole.

  • Switch to fat-free or low-fat milk.

  • Vary your protein choices.

  • Cut back on sodium and empty calories from solid fats and added sugars.

  • Enjoy your food but eat less.

  • Be physically ac...

National Nutrition Month® is a nutrition education and information campaign created annually in March by the American Dietetic Association.  The campaign focuses attention on the importance of making informed food choices and developing sound eating and physical activity habits.

National Nutrition Month® (NNM) was actually initiated in March of 1973 as a week-long event.  In 1980, it began to run throughout the entire month of March due to a growing public interest in nutrition.

This March, the theme is Eat Right with Color and the American Dietetic Association suggested that nutrition professionals as well as bloggers write about what “Eat Right with Color” means to them.

So here goes…

To me, Eat Right with Color means consuming a variety of foods that consist of different colors to get the nutrients we need.  (I mean, check out the NNM logo of all the different foods and colors, right?!)  But that sounds incredibly boring and oversimplified, doe...
